Hi All - I just signed up for k9academy. Lifelong dog owner, but have never done a formal training program.

We have an existing 6 year old St. Bernard female that is lazy and docile but has shown aggression towards other dogs in the past. She is our only dog.

We are bringing home an 11 week old Scotch Collie puppy that is going to be our farm/homestead dog.

In doing research, it looks like we should be cautious and slow with our introduction process to ensure a good first meeting between our Saint and the Collie. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Also, the new Collie is not crate trained. The Saint is not either, and she sleeps on the floor in our bedroom. The new pup is going to be super stressed coming to a new home with a new dog. I will get him home around 1pm on Saturday and we go to bed around 10:30, etc. Should we immediately start crate training? Where do we put the crate? Bedroom, garage, basement? He will likely be stressed in the crate for the 7 hour sleep time, and we want to avoid a negative reaction to the crate.

Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you!

So I have been going up to the Fortress K9 facility for the last few weeks to work on tracking with Joel and figured it may help others in the program if I started logging some of my thoughts and experience here. I had listened to some of the info in different episodes of the protection dog podcast and had been doing some "tracking" with Loki that after a little I found out was more detection training then tracking. Ether way it was a lot of fun to do till I realized what I was doing had no real world application unless whoever I wanted to find had a kong, and likely the one I had been using, tied to them. When I heard Joel mention a few different times he was looking for someone to run tracks for him to work up a few of his dogs I decided to start working toward being able to do that. I made it up to the facility to some of the group classes to stress test Loki a little before committing to doing this and exposed some unknown issues I had caused/missed but with a little coaching and some focus I was able to get that turned around real quick and felt confident to start learning this new skill.

More to follow.

I found some of the training videos Joel has on youtube while searching for our next dog and felt a lot of his approach made sense so dug a little deeper. I always had a lot of respect for working line dogs but never thought I had the time/understanding to do one of these dogs justice. After a few weeks of watching more videos and diving into the podcast I started to come around and decided to pull the trigger and put a deposit down on a Fortress K9 Dutch Shepard. My prior dogs were a Boxer/American bull dog mix and boxer that were at best "good boys" but had no level of obedience. I've had Loki for a little over a year now and cant wait to see how he turns out. I work in the automotive field and we have a three year old daughter. Most hobbys outside of dog training revolve around staying active, running, hiking, biking, gardening etc.
